Starring: Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, Alison Brie, Liam Neeson, Will Ferrell
Premiered at Regency Theatre, Los Angeles on February 2nd. Released in the UK on February 14th 2014.
Average construction worker, Emmet (Pratt), finds the piece of resistance which he must use with the help of Wyldstyle (Banks) and the other Master Builders to stop the Evil Lord Business (Ferrell) from using the Kragle to destroy the world. Easily dismissed as little more than another kid’s film to join the selection coming out in the new year, the Lego movie is the ultimate family film.
Though it should be avoided if you’re not a fan of Lego, you don’t have to be a hardcore fan to appreciate the level of detail included in every scene. Everything, literally every single thing from the buildings and people, to water, fire and smoke are made of Lego bricks that you can buy in the stores, creating a completely believable self-contained world.
In addition to the amazing graphics is the script. While on the surface it may seem a simple children’s tale with easily digestible morals, beneath the surface is a deeper story about the complexities and fears of growing up and disparity within family.
The cast is stacked, the visuals are fantastic, and the story strikes a good balance between entertaining and compelling. Several years in the making, the thought, effort, and passion is evident in every single frame. From the intricacy and detail in each Lego construct to the clever, witty, script, the film is memorable in all the right ways.
