An easily recognisable brand, highly anticipated and simultaneously released in IMAX. There were high hopes for this film from many for a whole range of different reasons. So I’m just going to go ahead and say this. I enjoyed this movie. The reason I say this so bluntly is because others who are better-versed in the original comics than I am are much more critical of film than myself and seem to take offense to my enjoyment.
Some have admonished me for falling for the flash-bang and overall entertaining nature of this film. Apparently it's wrong to approve of something that moved me emotionally, and is visually appealing. Being able to understand and empathise with the characters isn't something I should be proud of as the decisions made don't align appropriately with established Spider-man canon. That the film's failures far outweigh where it went right. From what I can tell, the less aware you are of the adaptation discrepancies, the more you’re going to enjoy this film.
That's not to say I love it blindly. There are some pacing issues and there's definitely some truth that the film tries to do a lot in a very limited timespan. That says nothing to several very questionable character designs but even so there is a lot more to this film than a lot of people are giving it credit for.
Despite its shortcomings, it's visually spectacular, and is a solid addition to the Amazing Spider-man filmography.
